Lewis WinesTallent Cabernet SauvignonSourced from longtime farmer Drew Tallent in the Hickory Sands north of Mason. These tough Cabernet vines managed Winter Storm Uri without any issues, giving us a healthy vine and nice crop for what was one of the coolest years in recent history. While summer was plagued with over 40" of rain and hail, Drew's vineyard lucked out and missed the hailstorms. The Hickory Sandstone is what it sounds like, sandy, and thus drains really well making the abundant rains more of a blessing than a challenge. Combine that with the area's relatively low humidity and Cabernet's naturally small berries and we were into the exceptionally cool Fall weather without any real issues in the vineyard. Harvested in late September at 4am, around 50 degrees outside. Fermented in tank for about a month, then aged in neutral French oak for 16 months. This Cab is medium-full bodied at 14% with red fruits, roasted peppers, salted caramel, vanilla and the iron-like minerality unique to the Hickory Sands. Extremely food friendly and drinkable on its own, think barbecue, grilled meats, and smash burgers. 198 cases produced.
